Doula Harriet

Harriet Mugwiji

I became a doula after having already worked in childcare and trained to be a newborn care specialist. During that time, I learned about postpartum depression and became interested in learning about the other aspects of motherhood. I have also trained as a Lactation Educator, Birth and Postpartum Doula and I am in the process of studying to be a Certified Lactation Consultant. I have trained to be an infant loss doula and I am in the process of taking upcoming trainings with regards to fertility health, menopause and women and men’s health. I have been a doula for some time now and I became interested in this work when I learned about the maternal and infant mortality rates. I want to make a positive impact and change in family relationships by helping them become better acclimated to welcoming a newborn baby to the family. I also educate pregnant women on how to advocate for themselves inside and outside of the healthcare system. I simply enjoy this work as I learn a lot from it. It has led me into paths I did not imagine I would end up in. I feel a sense of ease when I am able to assist a parent with their journey and also when they feel empowered that they have learnt something or that they have accomplished something they thought they would never do. I feel excited when they are excited.
