I was called to this service following the sudden and unexpected death of my youngest child in 2023.
As a still apprenticing death doula, the heart of my developing practice finds its clearest expression in the Irish word ‘caomh’ which, as a noun signifies a ‘dear companion’ and as an adjective describes what is ‘gentle’; it also calls to mind, through the related verb ‘caomhnú’, the act of conserving, protecting, and cherishing.
My practice, which I like to call caomhnaíocht (gentle companioning), emphasises the importance of natural ceremony and heart-centred presence, of listening without expecting any answer to come, and above all of coming to understand that we are not alone on this journey.
